The Walking Damned: Web Episode 2: The Blood of Mneme

Only a small handful of families have shown up to the East Barracks. The city guard were expecting many hundreds of families. All available city guard have been called in for duty during this crisis. The guard that have shown up have made a perimeter around the families as they are ushered inside. Some guards are up on the roof manning the ballistas.

One of those families today is Thesius and his teen-aged son, Phobos, centaurs. Yes they were outsiders but they were accepted here just as well as if they had been human. Because Thesius was a retired imperial trooper. He was a veteran trained in the art of war, having fought in the Giant Wars for the emperor years ago. Ever since Phobos was old enough to lift a blade, Thesius has trained him in the Art. Just last week he had gotten his first set of full plate barding. Thesius could not have been more proud watching him being fit up by the blacksmiths.

And here they are today, Thesius and Phobos, together in their full plate barding and weapons of war. Young Phobos with his greatsword unsheathed and his back to the barracks, guarding his father. Already the child had stood next to his father while they both had killed dozens of the walking damned.

Many of them had been neighbors.

Some had even been his classmates from school.

But worst of all were the drops of blood falling from his blade even now. The blood of Mneme, his mother.

Now Thesius is all the family he has and he guards him with his life, turning his blade against the living and the walking damned alike if they get too close.

Thesius' hand comes to rest upon young Phobos' shoulder. "Come on inside, boy," he whispers as they vanish into the dark hall of the East Barracks entrance. "We are safe now."

The Walking Damned comment by Captain Awesome:
This is an interesting piece. I can see the intent in providing a small insight into a possible replacement pc, or even an npc that our party might meet later (which would be a difficult encounter given the current conditions of society).

Interesting. Never played a centaur. Not really my style, but could be fun. Looking at Phobos' stats though, does he need to use a feat to take "Martial Weapon Proficiency (greatsword)" when it appears that he already has it with his base class/template?

well actually the centaur monster class (from Savage Species) says:
"Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Centaurs are proficient with all simple weapons, the heavy lance, and the mighty composite longbow, but with no armor or shields. Centaurs count as nonhumanoid creatures for the purpose of determining the cost of armor (see Chapter 7 of the Player's Handbook)."

So to use a greatsword he had to take the Martial Weapon Proficiency feat, and to use full plate barding he had to take the Way of the Crab feat (which grants heavy armor proficiency, but not medium or light armor). Without the Way of the Crab, it would cost more feats to get heavy armor proficiency.

Aside from the monster class, the centaur from the Monster Manual is a 2-HD Monstrous Humanoid. Reading the entry for the Monstrous Humanoid shows this:
"Proficient with all simple weapons and any weapons mentioned in its entry.
Proficient with whatever type of armor (light, medium, or heavy) it is described as wearing, as well as all lighter types. Monstrous humanoids not indicated as wearing armor are not proficient with armor. Monstrous humanoids are proficient with shields if they are proficient with any form of armor."

The centaur in the Monster Manual is not wearing any armor, so it has no armor or shield proficiency.

This makes it challenging to build a heavy armored tank using the centaur.

BTW, Phobos' 20 level career is mapped out as follows: 6 levels of Centaur monster class, 5 levels of Undead Stalker, 10 levels of Foe Hunter, and 1 more level of Undead Stalker.

Feats (these will appear to be out of sync but its because of the monster class):
4th level: 3rd level Class Feat: Power Attack
7th level: 1st level Undead Stalker bonus feat: Track
8th level: 2nd level Undead Stalker bonus feat: Rapid Shot
8th level: 6th level Class Feat: Armor Mastery (heavy)
11th level: 9th level Class Feat: Weapon Focus (greatsword)
14th level: 12th level Class Feat: Favored Dodge (undead)
17th level: 15th level Class Feat: Improved Favored Enemy
20th level: 18th level Class Feat: Supernatural Blow

By level 20, Phobos will have +3d6 sneak attack undead which stacks with the Foe Hunter's +5d6 rancor against his Hated Enemy (undead), plus a total of DR 11/- versus his hated enemy. At 6th level he will become a fully grown (Large) centaur and need to find new Large barding and a large greatsword. So, Phobos is an undead killing heavy tank with reach and knockdown/trample that doesn't become epic until his 23rd class level.

Nice job with the Centaur, I think he would be a valuable asset for the party, if someone played him. If no one does, it would be interesting if he somehow joined up with him later as it looks like we are all converging to face a greater evil.

Aha. Well we just proved that I never bothered to look at the Centaur template. :)
