Shackled City: ECL 5 Korinth the Protector Silverbrow Human Cloistered Cleric 5: Entry 3

Journal Entry 5169

For many nights now I have gone without sleep; left wondering at the fate of myself and the souls of those that ventured underground to fight evil.  Those of us that were successful were not the first to make the attempt.  After awhile I was told the story of those that had gone before us.  The elf known as Osiris and the crusader Qabbiqah were the only "known" survivors.  They were only too willing to tell us the tale; after we had gotten out alive.
Why then after such catastrophic failure from those who went before, were we so able to vanquish?  As for myself I barely drew on the power of Pelor to help in the darkest hour.  I was saving the brilliance of the Shining One for what I thought would be a final showdown with the vampire.  But the other cleric that accompanied us did very well with his command of the divine gift and most of our success was due to combat, not faith.
So why were the holy men so sought after for this mission?  Why was my aid so imperative?
Is it fate that has set us on this course?  I ponder and pray for answers to these questions as I await whatever job the church bids me do next.  The flood festival starts soon.  I don't know that I will participate in nor enjoy the festivities, but I will keep my eyes and mind open so that evil can not gain a foothold here in our fair city.
